Hung Gar

Demonstration of Hung Gar Presently we do not offer a class in Hung Gar, but hope to do so in the near future.

Hung Gar is a Southern Shaolin based Kung Fu system. It emphasizes low stances, strength training, five animals (Leopard, Tiger, Crane, Snake, and Dragon), and the five elements (gold, wood, water, fire, and earth). Each animal possesses specific mental and physical attributes. By learning all animals a Hung Gar practitioner exhibits a wide range of techniques, as well as a variety of ways to develop power.

Hung Gar is very aggressive with a considerable amount of emphasis on developing brute strength. Many outsiders consider Hung Gar to be too hard. But those who truly understand the system realize it incorporates many circular and redirectional techniques. Stance training, dynamic tension, physically demanding workouts, and long forms ensure that a Hung Gar practitioner is in top shape.

Hung Gar shares many of the basic building blocks with those found in Wing Chun and other Shaolin based systems. This is apparent by watching the opening of the famous Tiger/Crane set, which many consider to be the form that best demonstrates the system. There are extensive weapons training and many very practical two-man sparring sets. The two-man sets address both empty hand and weapons sparring. Hung Gar is a very traditional system that requires a great amount of physical aptitude. Hung Gar also sees itself as a highly moral system and is one of the few present day systems that tries to actively instill traditional discipline within its students.
