Southern vs. Northern
Generally speaking, Southern Kung Fu systems are known for their hand techniques
and Northern Kung Fu systems for their leg techniques. This is an over
generalization and ultimately depends upon the specific system and Sifu.
Southern styles tend to stress more hand techniques and generally
kicks are below the waist for combat applications. Most Southern systems
emphasize the importance of a stable stance and are unwilling to sacrifice
balance. The Butterfly Sword is a weapon that is unique to Southern systems
and all Southern systems offer some type of staff training; whether it be the
rattan pole, solid pole or long pole.
Northern practitioners tend to
have more flamboyant movements and a kicking arsenal that can be very flashy.
Movements are usually more graceful and elegant than their southern counterparts.
Ideally, if you are genuinely interested in real Kung Fu, then you will
learn elements from both systems. Many modern systems incorporate Northern and
Southern influences. This is particularly true with Choy Lay Fut and many Mantis
systems. |
