Weapons
The Chan brothers have a unique knowledge of weapons. Since childhood
they have always been fascinated with weapons and have turned that
fascination into knowledge and martial skill. Although both Sifus are
familiar with both long and short weapons, each one has his own unique
base of knowledge from which to draw upon. This makes their weapons
training very interesting because they can offer the same weapons
(ex. Butterfly Swords) from many different systems. One of the Sifus
prefers short weapons and the other one prefers long weapons. This
diversity is a bonus for their students who have the knowledge of two
masters, instead of one. Their weapons training is not just in forms,
but also two-man sparring sets and drills taken from Chinese Kung Fu
and a variety of Filipino martial arts.
The class emphasizes Filipino weaponry at the start. The stick, double
stick, and single knife are introduced the first year. Two-man drills,
disarming, and basic self defense are taught. Chinese weaponry is not
part of the regular class and students interested in learning Chinese
weapons or hand forms must speak with one of the Sifus about the
possibility of private lessons.
Some of the Chinese weapons that the Chan brothers have trained in include -
|
- Staff
- Spear
- Single and double broadsword(s)
- Straight sword
- Kwan do
- Tiger fork
|
- Butterfly swords
- Whip chain
- Fan
- Cane
- 3 Sectional staff
|
The Sifus are also familiar with many exotic weapons that few
instructors are willing to share even with students.
Fortunately, the Chan brothers have so much to offer they
are often willing to part with knowledge that other instructors would
keep to themselves.
Only long time students of the school will be considered for private
lessons. It is a privilege to learn one-on-one with a Sifu, not a right.
The Sifus' schedules are very busy and presently there is a long waiting
list of students who would like to take private lessons.
Why don't you teach Chinese weapons and forms as part of the regular
class? There are two reasons, time constraints and the fact that many students are not
interested in forms. The main thrust of the class is JKD, Filipino, and
Wing Chun. It will take a student, even with natural ability, a long
time to comprehend these three systems. Not everyone has the talent
or desire to learn Chinese weapons or hand forms. In the future, when the
Sifus' schedules are less demanding, they may offer a class in Hung Gar
or Chinese weaponry/hand forms.
